House of Representatives Urges Fuel Market Competition in Nigeria
The Nigerian House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to allow independent petroleum marketers to purchase Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) directly from the Dangote Refinery.
This resolution was passed during a plenary session after a motion by Hon. Oboku Oforji, who raised concerns that only the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and major marketers were being granted access to lift fuel from the refinery.
Oforji argued that giving exclusive rights to NNPCL and major marketers would create a monopoly, limiting competition and potentially exacerbating fuel scarcity and high prices. Allowing independent marketers to participate, he stated, would increase competition, improve product availability, and drive down fuel costs, benefiting millions of Nigerians. He also warned that independent marketers might have to resort to importing fuel to sustain their operations if they continue to be excluded.
The House further recommended that the Dangote Refinery establish or partner with tank farms across the country to ensure wider distribution and easier access to petroleum products
