Benefits of Single-Term Presidency in Nigeria
Atiku Abubakar, a prominent Nigerian politician and former Vice President, has proposed significant reforms to Nigeria’s political structure, advocating for a six-year single term for the President and Governors.
This would replace the current system of two four-year terms. The idea is aimed at reducing the distractions caused by re-election campaigns and allowing leaders to focus on governance without the pressure of securing a second term.
Additionally, Atiku supports the idea of a rotational presidency between the North and the South. This proposal seeks to address Nigeria’s regional and ethnic divides, ensuring that political power is shared equitably between the two major geopolitical regions.
The aim is to promote national unity by giving all regions a sense of inclusion in the governance of the country.
Both proposals are part of broader discussions on constitutional and electoral reforms in Nigeria, aiming to reduce political tension and foster more stable leadership transitions.
These ideas have sparked debates across political and social circles, with supporters believing they could promote unity and reduce corruption, while critics argue that such reforms might not address the underlying issues of governance and accountability.
