ASUU’s Grim Report: 84 Lecturers Lost to Salary Issues
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has revealed that 84 lecturers in Nigeria died between May and August 2024, primarily due to the financial strain caused by unpaid salaries.
This startling statistic was shared by ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, during a televised interview. He emphasized the severe economic hardships faced by university staff, which have been exacerbated by a “no-work, no-pay” policy following the 2022 industrial action.
Osodeke urged the Nigerian government to resolve ongoing issues, including unpaid salaries and increased costs of living, in order to prevent further loss of life and ensure the proper functioning of the country’s higher education system
