Six Repentant Insurgents Escape Deradicalization Program in Borno
The Borno State Government has confirmed that six repentant Boko Haram insurgents escaped from a deradicalization and reconciliation program.
The government clarified that earlier reports suggesting that 13 insurgents escaped with government-issued weapons were false.
According to the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, the escapees did not abscond with any firearms.
The six individuals were part of a larger group of over 20,000 militants who had been processed and categorized as “low risk” in terms of their likelihood to relapse into violence.
Security forces are actively working to track and apprehend the escaped individuals, while authorities urge the public not to amplify the situation, which could aid terrorist propaganda and harm ongoing counter-insurgency efforts.
