Investigation Sought for Missing Corps Member in Nigeria
The Nigerian House of Representatives has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to urgently investigate and rescue a missing corps member, Godwin Okeke. Okeke, a 2023 Batch B Stream 1 corps member serving in Akure South, Ondo State, has been missing since May 9, 2024.
He was a top graduate from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State and was expected to complete his service in June.
The motion, brought forward by Representative Nnolim Nnaji, raised concerns about the lack of action from both the police and the NYSC.
Despite the family’s efforts, including trips to Akure and multiple reports to authorities, no substantial progress has been made in locating Okeke.
Nnaji highlighted the broader issue of inadequate security and facilities for corps members, urging both federal and state governments to ensure their safety.
The House of Representatives has asked the IGP and the NYSC Director-General to take immediate action, while also urging President Bola Tinubu to ensure corps members are better protected in their service locations.
