Local Governance Disrupted by Bandits in Sokoto Communities
The chairman of Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State, Alhaji Sharifu Kamarawa, has raised concerns about bandit activity in his communities.
During a visit from the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, Kamarawa revealed that bandits, led by notorious leader Kachalla Bello Turji, have been appointing and deposing village heads in the eastern parts of his local government.
While Isa town remains peaceful, the bandits exert control over several villages, disrupting local governance.
Kamarawa appealed for the re-establishment of a military camp in Kagara, which had previously provided some stability before it was relocated.
Since the death of a key bandit leader, Halilu Sububu, attacks in the area have lessened, but the chairman emphasized the need for greater military presence to restore full peace and security.
Matawalle assured that efforts are being made to militarize dangerous zones, and additional security measures will be put in place to counter the influence of bandits in these areas.
