Nigerian Army Maintains Stability Amid Chief Lagbaja’s Medical Leave
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria has confirmed that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, is currently undergoing medical treatment abroad.
In a statement addressing concerns about a possible leadership vacuum in his absence, the DHQ assured the public that there is no such vacuum, as the military structure remains intact and operational.
The DHQ emphasized that despite Lagbaja’s absence for medical reasons, the Nigerian Army and broader military apparatus continue to function effectively, with all duties and responsibilities being adequately handled by senior officers in his stead.
The military high command is still fully engaged in managing national security matters, ensuring that operations, especially those related to ongoing security challenges, are not disrupted.
Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, who assumed office as Chief of Army Staff earlier in 2023, is a key figure in Nigeria’s security leadership.
His health and ability to resume his duties are being closely watched, given the country’s ongoing battles against insurgency, banditry, and other forms of insecurity.
This reassurance from the DHQ is intended to calm any public concerns about instability or disruptions within the military hierarchy due to his medical treatment.
