Critics of EFCC: What They Don’t Understand
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has strongly dismissed calls for its overhaul, particularly from critics who question its role and legality.
According to Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, those pushing for the reform are “feeling the heat” of the agency’s operations.
Uwujaren emphasized that the EFCC is critical to Nigeria’s fight against corruption and that scrapping or overhauling it would be detrimental to the country’s efforts to tackle financial crimes.
This comes in the context of a legal challenge by 16 state governments questioning the constitutionality of the EFCC.
Despite these challenges, Uwujaren insisted that the agency is indispensable, given Nigeria’s ongoing battle with corruption.
He urged Nigerians to see through the motives of those advocating for the agency’s removal, suggesting that many of these individuals are uncomfortable with the scrutiny and accountability the EFCC enforces.
