Albania’s Crackdown on Corruption: Former President Arrested
Albania’s former president, Ilir Meta, was arrested on October 21, 2024, over allegations of corruption, money laundering, and hiding his wealth.
Meta, who now leads the opposition Freedom Party, was detained by police as he returned from Kosovo.
His arrest followed an order from Albania’s Special Prosecutor for Corruption (SPAK).
Meta’s spokesperson criticized the arrest, describing it as inappropriate, and suggested protests might follow.
The arrest is part of Albania’s ongoing crackdown on high-level corruption.
