Legal Ruling Halts Kano Local Government Elections
A Federal High Court in Kano has barred the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from conducting the local government elections scheduled for October 26, 2024.
The court ruled that Sani Malumfashi, the chairman of KANSIEC, and other members of the commission were unfit for their roles due to their affiliation with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and their failure to meet the required civil service qualifications.
The court declared that all actions taken by the commission in preparation for the election, such as the issuance of election guidelines and screening of candidates, were null and void.
As a result, the commission is prohibited from overseeing the elections until qualified individuals are appointed.
