The Nigerian Senate has set up an ad hoc committee to investigate allegations of drug trafficking made by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) against Senator Oyelola Ashiru of Kwara South.
This move follows a motion raised by Senator Ashiru, who has denied the accusations and claimed they were in retaliation for his critical remarks about the NDLEA during a debate on the establishment of a National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.
Senator Ashiru described the allegations as baseless and an attack on his reputation, particularly after his contribution to a bill aimed at addressing drug awareness and rehabilitation issues.
The Senate committee, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, is expected to complete its investigation and report back within a week.
The NDLEA had accused Ashiru of involvement in drug trafficking, which he vehemently denies, further criticizing the agency for corruption.
