Why Igbo Leaders Deserve Equal Opportunity
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently expressed his view that it is unfair to deny the Igbo presidency based on the region’s past attempt to secede from Nigeria.
He argued that all major ethnic groups in Nigeria have at one point or another expressed desires to break away from the country.
Obasanjo highlighted that blaming the Igbo alone for this historical event is unjust, as Nigeria’s unity is a shared responsibility among all its peoples.
He called for fairness and inclusivity in the country’s leadership decisions.
Obasanjo has also consistently condemned “Igbophobia,” emphasizing that no ethnic group should face discrimination based on past events, and he advocates for embracing merit and competence over ethnic bias in leadership.
