Xiaoning Zhang Gets 25 Years to Life for Murder Crime
A woman in Queens, New York, Xiaoning Zhang, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the fatal stabbing of immigration lawyer Jim Li.
The incident occurred after Li dropped Zhang as a client due to her admitting that she had lied on her asylum application.
Zhang returned to his office days later with two knives and stabbed him to death. Li was well known for his work on political asylum cases and his activism during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.
Zhang was convicted of murder, along with other charges, and her sentence was handed down in October 2024.
In another case, Jade Janks from San Diego was also sentenced to 25 years to life for the murder of her stepfather, Tom Merriman.
She killed him after discovering nude photos of herself on his computer. Prosecutors argued that she drugged and then strangled him, though she claimed his death was accidental.
The court, however, found her guilty of first-degree murder.
