Is the South East still a part of Nigeria? - Kanayo O. Kanayo asks as he complains about the high number of police and military checkpoints on South East roads

Kanayo O. Kanayo Questions South East Security Measures

Kanayo O. Kanayo, a prominent Nollywood actor, recently raised concerns about the heavy military and police presence in Nigeria’s South East region, particularly the numerous checkpoints on the roads.

He questioned whether the South East is still part of Nigeria, expressing frustration over the high frequency of security checkpoints, which he described as humiliating and disruptive to daily life.

This issue of excessive checkpoints has been echoed by others, including the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), which criticized the militarization of the region, arguing that it discourages investment and creates an atmosphere of fear and oppression.

The NUJ urged the federal government to reduce the number of these checkpoints, calling them “embarrassing” and harmful to the South East’s economic potential.
