Remembering Humphrey Nwosu: Architect of Nigeria’s 1993 Election
Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of Nigeria’s National Electoral Commission (NEC), has passed away at the age of 84.
Nwosu, best known for his role in conducting the historic June 12, 1993, election—widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history—died in a U.S. hospital in October 2024.
He introduced the innovative Option A4 voting system and the open ballot process, which were key in that election.
His work left a significant impact on Nigeria’s democratic journey, though the election he oversaw was controversially annulled by the military regime at the time.
