Panel Exonerates Nigerian Military Amid Forced Abortion Allegations
The Nigerian military has been cleared of the mass forced abortion claims involving thousands of women and girls, as investigated by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The panel found no evidence to support the allegations that the military conducted a systematic abortion program as claimed in a Reuters report, which had suggested that at least 10,000 pregnancies were terminated between 2013 and 2021.
The commission, however, did indict soldiers for the deaths of children and community members in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, specifically pointing to an incident in 2016 where a woman and three children were killed in a fire set by soldiers.
