Meta Faces $840 Million Fine from EU for Advertising Abuses
The European Union has fined Meta $840 million (€797.72 million) for violating antitrust rules related to its Facebook Marketplace service.
The European Commission found that Meta unfairly tied its classified ads platform, Facebook Marketplace, to the main Facebook platform.
This practice allegedly gave Marketplace an unjust distribution advantage, forcing users to interact with it regardless of their interest and restricting competition.
Additionally, Meta was accused of using advertising data from other advertisers on its platforms to benefit Facebook Marketplace, imposing unfair conditions on competitors.
This marks one of the largest antitrust penalties imposed by the EU and continues its trend of targeting Big Tech companies for regulatory breaches.
Meta has stated its intent to appeal the decision, claiming the EU’s findings misrepresent the thriving market for online classified services and emphasizing that users engage with Marketplace voluntarily.
The company also argued there was no evidence of harm to consumers or competitor.
