Why Lagos Government is Demolishing Shanties with High Rents
The Lagos State Government has demolished 138 shanties situated along the canal in Ajao Estate as part of its efforts to address environmental infractions and illegal encampments. Occupants of these makeshift structures reportedly paid between ₦60,000 and ₦100,000 annually to reside there.
The demolition was carried out by the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, following several warnings to vacate the area.
