The Truth Behind Wike’s Response to Falana’s Unconstitutional Gift Claims
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has responded to criticism by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana, who labeled the construction of homes for judges unconstitutional.
Falana argued that provisions for judges’ welfare should come through the National Judicial Council (NJC) and not directly from the executive, suggesting such actions compromise judicial independence.
In his defense, Wike clarified that the housing project is not a personal initiative but part of President Tinubu’s approved welfare policies for the judiciary.
He stated that the construction was included in the 2024 budget, approved by the National Assembly, and is aimed at ensuring judicial independence by providing secure housing for judges.
He emphasized that as the minister, he is merely implementing a federal government-approved policy and not acting independently or unconstitutionally.
