Devastating Floods in Northern Philippines: Dam Release After Typhoon
Devastating floods have struck northern regions of the Philippines following Typhoon Pepito (known internationally as Man-yi), which brought heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The storm, which made landfall on the island of Catanduanes on November 16, caused significant damage across the country, with at least eight fatalities reported.
One of the most severe impacts occurred when water was released from Magat Dam in Isabela Province.
The release, prompted by the substantial inflow of water due to the typhoon’s rains, caused the Cagayan River and surrounding tributaries to overflow.
Floodwaters inundated towns like Ilagan, where rooftops were seen peeking above the brown waters.
The Magat Dam had to release water from its seven gates to prevent a potential collapse, despite the devastating impact on surrounding areas.
This flooding has affected hundreds of homes, with some officials fearing that Ilagan city could be severely damaged if the release continues.
