Senate Dismisses Danladi Umar as CCT Chairman: Impact and Implications
The Nigerian Senate has removed Danladi Umar as the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), citing gross misconduct and corruption allegations.
The decision followed a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, invoking Section 157(1) of the Nigerian Constitution.
This action required the support of at least two-thirds of the Senate, with 84 senators endorsing the motion.
The allegations against Umar include absenteeism from office, corruption, misappropriation of funds, and a physical altercation with a security officer.
The Senate emphasized that such behavior was unbecoming of someone in a position tasked with upholding public morality and accountability.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier nominated Abdullahi Usman Bello as the new CCT Chairman, which the Senate confirmed in July 2024, paving the way for Umar’s removal.
