Legislative Progress: Bill to Increase FCT Judges Advances
A bill seeking to increase the number of judges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court from 70 to 100 has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
The proposed legislation aims to address the growing workload and delays in the justice delivery system within the FCT.
During the debate, lawmakers highlighted the critical need for more judicial officers to handle the increasing volume of cases, which has strained the court system and affected timely dispensation of justice.
Supporters of the bill noted that the current number of judges is insufficient for the rapidly expanding population and legal demands of the FCT.
The bill will now proceed to the committee stage for further review and recommendations.
If eventually passed and signed into law, it will empower the judiciary to appoint additional judges to enhance efficiency and reduce the backlog of cases in the FCT courts.
