Why Representatives Rejected the Six-Year Single-Term Proposal for Presidents and Governors

The Nigerian House of Representatives has rejected a bill proposing a six-year single term for the President and state Governors.

The bill, intended to replace the current system of two four-year terms, was introduced to reduce the high costs and political tensions associated with re-elections.

However, lawmakers opposed it, arguing that it would limit accountability and deny citizens the opportunity to re-elect performing leaders.

This decision maintains the existing term limits as provided in Nigeria’s constitution.
