Ndume’s Swift Tax Reform Bill: Unwrapping the Hidden Agenda
Senator Ali Ndume has expressed strong opposition to the rush in passing the tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to Ndume, the bills are poorly timed given the current economic hardships Nigerians are enduring.
He warned that the legislation could exacerbate poverty and increase the burden on citizens who are already struggling to meet basic needs.
Ndume, alongside other legislators like Aliyu Madaki, is mobilizing colleagues to block the passage of the bills, which include measures to restructure tax administration and potentially raise VAT rates.
The senator argued that the bills lack sufficient consultation and fail to consider the recommendations of the Northern Governors Forum and the National Economic Council, both of which have advised withdrawal for further review.
The proposed bills aim to enhance tax efficiency but have been criticized for being potentially “anti-people,” especially given Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Ndume insists that public input and better timing are essential for any reforms to be considered.
