International Legal Tensions: ICC Dismisses Mongolia’s Putin Appeal
The International Criminal Court (ICC) recently ruled that Mongolia violated its obligations under the Rome Statute by failing to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit.
The court rejected Mongolia’s argument that Putin, as a sitting head of state, enjoyed immunity under international law, stating that Article 27 of the Rome Statute overrides such immunity in cases of serious crimes like those Putin is accused of.
Mongolia’s failure to act on the ICC’s request has been referred to the Assembly of State Parties, which will determine further action.
