Okonjo-Iweala Reappointed: How Her Leadership Shapes WTO’s Future

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed for a second term as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Her reappointment comes as she was the sole candidate for the position, with no other nominations received by the November 8, 2024, deadline.

Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to lead the WTO, expressed her willingness to continue her leadership in a letter submitted earlier this year.

Her second four-year term will focus on advancing the WTO’s trade discussions, addressing global economic challenges, and enhancing the organization’s dispute resolution mechanisms.

She initially assumed the role in February 2021 and has since been praised for her leadership and commitment to revitalizing the WTO.
