Niger Boat Accident: Search Efforts Continue for Missing Passengers
A tragic incident occurred in Niger State, Nigeria, where a boat carrying over 300 passengers capsized at the Gbajibo River in Mokwa Local Government Area.
The vessel was traveling from Mundi to Gbajibo for the Maulud celebration when the disaster struck.
So far, around 60 bodies have been recovered, with over 100 passengers rescued. Many others remain missing as rescue operations, involving emergency agencies and local volunteers, are ongoing.
Preliminary reports suggest overloading as a contributing factor to the tragedy, as the boat exceeded its safe capacity.
The authorities are urging stricter adherence to safety measures, including avoiding night travel and wearing life jackets to prevent similar incidents in the future.
