ICPC Chairman Reveals 70% of Nigerians Said No to Bribes in 2023
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) recently highlighted a positive trend in its anti-corruption report.
According to the ICPC Chairman, Musa Aliyu, 70% of Nigerians who were approached for bribes in 2023 refused to pay.
This statistic reflects growing resistance to corruption across the country. The refusal rate was highest in the North-West zone at 76%, and all geopolitical zones reported rates above 60%.
The report also noted that the main reasons Nigerians refused to pay bribes included moral convictions (42%), alternative options for obtaining services (21%), and financial constraints (23%).
Additionally, incidents of negative consequences for refusing bribes decreased compared to previous years.
This data, sourced from the “Corruption in Nigeria: Patterns and Trends Report” by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), suggests an increase in awareness and willingness to challenge corrupt practices among Nigerians.
