Defamation Case: Dele Farotimi Remanded for Allegations Against Afe Babalola
Human rights activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi has been remanded in an Ekiti prison following his arraignment on charges of defaming legal icon Afe Babalola (SAN).
The charges stem from statements made in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, where he alleged corruption involving Babalola and the judiciary.
The prosecution presented a 16-count charge, accusing Farotimi of publishing false statements that could damage reputations and disrupt public peace.
Farotimi pleaded not guilty, but the magistrate denied bail, ordering his detention until the next hearing on December 10, 2024.
His arrest and remand have sparked criticism, with some alleging that the judicial process appears influenced by the individuals involved.
Activist Omoyele Sowore also condemned the case, describing the process as premeditated and unjust.
