Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi Sparks Controversy with Rainbow Armband Message
Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi, a devout Christian, has drawn attention for inscribing religious messages on his rainbow-colored captain’s armband during matches supporting the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign, which promotes LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports.
In a match against Newcastle United, Guéhi wrote “I love Jesus” on his armband, leading the Football Association (FA) to remind him of regulations prohibiting political, religious, or personal slogans on player equipment.
Despite this reminder, Guéhi wore an armband with “Jesus loves you” written on it in a subsequent match against Ipswich Town. The FA reiterated its guidelines but did not impose any formal charges.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner defended Guéhi, emphasizing his respectfulness and tolerance.
This incident has sparked discussions about the balance between personal religious expression and adherence to campaign regulations within professional sports.
It also highlights the challenges organizations face in promoting inclusivity while respecting individual beliefs.
