Islam and Girl-Child Education: Sultan Debunks Myths
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has stated that Islam is not against girl-child education.
He emphasized that Islam encourages education for both boys and girls, highlighting that the religion places a strong emphasis on the pursuit of knowledge for all individuals, regardless of gender.
The Sultan’s remarks came in response to growing concerns about the barriers girls face in accessing education, particularly in some parts of Northern Nigeria, where cultural and religious misunderstandings often hinder girls’ education.
He stressed that misconceptions about Islam’s stance on education for girls should be addressed, as the faith itself supports the empowerment and education of women.
The Sultan, as a religious and traditional leader, has long been an advocate for the advancement of education in the region.
His statement aligns with efforts to promote girl-child education across Nigeria, especially in rural areas, and challenges those who use cultural practices to justify denying girls access to schooling.
He called for continued collaboration between religious leaders, educators, and policymakers to ensure that all children, regardless of gender, have the opportunity to receive quality education.
