Martial Law and Politics: How President Yoon Suk Yeol Avoided Impeachment
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol survived a vote to impeach him after his controversial decision to declare martial law.
The martial law, which was imposed earlier this week, sparked widespread protests and backlash. Opposition parties filed for his impeachment, accusing him of violating the constitution.
However, the vote to impeach Yoon was boycotted by the governing party lawmakers, with only a few present during the vote.
This allowed the motion to fail despite large protests outside the National Assembly. In response to the crisis, Yoon apologized for the martial law declaration, acknowledging that it caused public anxiety and promising not to repeat such actions.
While the impeachment motion did not pass, the opposition plans to file another motion next week.
