NAFDAC Alerts Bakeries: Halt the Use of Saccharine and Bromate in Bread
NAFDAC has issued a warning to bread producers in Nigeria regarding the use of harmful additives, specifically saccharine and potassium bromate.
Saccharine, an unapproved sweetener, is being used as a cheaper alternative to sugar, while bromate, a known carcinogen, has been banned for its health risks.
Recent investigations by NAFDAC revealed that bread samples from various markets contained these substances, prompting the agency to tighten its enforcement efforts.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized that all food additives must undergo rigorous safety assessments before approval. She reiterated that violators would face strict sanctions.
This comes amid broader efforts to ensure food safety and adherence to regulatory standards, as the agency has also shut down bakeries and seized harmful products during inspections.
Consumers are encouraged to report suspicious food products to NAFDAC as the agency works to protect public health and ensure the safety of food products in Nigeria
