Lawyers on Standby: Speed Darlington’s Legal Update on Akpi Case
Speed Darlington’s legal situation remains ongoing after his arrest in late November 2024, which marked his second detention in two months.
His lawyer, Stan Alieke, explained that the delay in his client’s arraignment occurred because the judges were at a conference.
He also pointed out that the courts will soon shut down for the festive season, which means the matter may not proceed until late January 2025.
While Darlington’s arrest has sparked accusations of abuse of power, his legal team is asserting that he is entitled to bail, as defamation is no longer a criminal offense in Nigeria.
They argue that such matters should be addressed through civil actions rather than criminal proceedings.
Public opinions on the case, whether in support of Darlington or Burna Boy, are being deemed irrelevant at this stage, as the matter is now under judicial review.
