Varsity Student Among Four Jailed for Internet Fraud in Kwara
A Kwara State High Court in Ilorin has convicted a university student and three others for internet fraud-related offenses.
The verdict was delivered after the suspects were arraigned by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The accused individuals were identified as:
- Adeola Godspower – A student of Kwara State University (KWASU).
- Abdullahi Kazeem – A car washer.
- John Johnson – A tailor.
- Abdulganiyu Dauda – A businessman.
They were charged with offenses ranging from impersonation to obtaining money under false pretenses, all in violation of the Cybercrime Act.
The court heard how the defendants engaged in various online fraudulent schemes to defraud unsuspecting victims.
During the trial, each of the accused pleaded guilty to the charges, prompting the court to hand down sentences that included fines, restitution orders, and forfeiture of items used in the commission of the crimes.
Items such as laptops, phones, and a car were confiscated by the EFCC as proceeds of illegal activities.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to combating cybercrime and has urged young Nigerians to desist from engaging in fraudulent activities, emphasizing the long-term consequences on individuals and the nation’s reputation.
