Understanding Nigerian Police Operations: Spokesperson Adejobi Responds to Criticism
The Nigeria Police Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has addressed criticism following an incident where police officers were seen searching a man who recently returned to Nigeria from Canada.
The critique, shared by a social media user, suggested that such actions were unwarranted and compared the legal standards between Nigeria and other countries.
Adejobi responded by explaining that Nigeria operates under its own laws, which differ from those in other nations.
He emphasized that police officers are empowered to conduct searches as part of their duties to ensure public safety and enforce the law.
In his statement, Adejobi said:
“We don’t operate the same law. What you think is improper here may be proper there, and what you think is proper here may be improper there. Our police and legal systems differ.”
This clarification underscores the autonomy of Nigerian law enforcement practices, although it sparked a broader conversation on the conduct of police officers and their engagement with citizens, especially those returning from abroad.
Critics argue that such actions could discourage diaspora engagement, while others support the need for police diligence to curb crime.
