INEC Addresses Fake News: Chairman Yakubu Mahmood’s Death Rumors Shut Down
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially dismissed rumors circulating on social media about the death of its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
These false claims alleged that he passed away in a London hospital.
INEC clarified through a statement by Yakubu’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, that the chairman is alive, healthy, and has not traveled to London in the last two years.
The commission highlighted Yakubu’s recent active engagements, including an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on December 11 and a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on December 12, both widely covered by the media.
INEC also criticized the recurrence of such false narratives, noting similar rumors in 2021, and reaffirmed its commitment to combating fake news while urging the public to disregard these misleading stories.
