The Alarming Rise of Family Abandonment in Gombe Due to Financial Strain
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has raised alarm over the increasing cases of fathers abandoning their families in Gombe State due to economic hardships.
In 2023 alone, 106 cases of paternal abandonment were reported, accounting for nearly 38% of the 280 family-related complaints received by the NHRC in the state.
The Commission linked the problem to severe economic challenges, which have left many men unable to provide basic needs for their families, leading to frustration and, in some cases, mental health struggles.
NHRC officials emphasized that such actions violate children’s rights and often result in negative societal impacts, including neglected children being exposed to harmful influences.
Efforts are being made by the NHRC to work with relevant stakeholders to increase awareness and support families in fulfilling their responsibilities.
