LA Times Shake-Up: Patrick Soon-Shiong Advises Editorial Board to Ease Trump Focus
Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of the Los Angeles Times, has reportedly directed the newspaper’s editorial board to “take a break from writing about Trump.” This directive has led to internal tensions and staff unrest within the organization.
Since acquiring the Los Angeles Times in 2018, Soon-Shiong has become more involved in editorial decisions. Notably, he blocked the publication of an editorial critical of Senate confirmation processes for President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks.
Additionally, he implemented a policy requiring criticisms of Trump to be juxtaposed with opposing views.
These actions have raised concerns among staff members about potential preemptive censorship and the possibility of retaliation.
Further, Soon-Shiong introduced a “bias meter” for articles and faced backlash for hiring conservative commentator Scott Jennings.
These moves have contributed to resignations within the editorial board and a subscription boycott by readers.
The Los Angeles Times’ editorial board has historically been known for its liberal stance.
