Reckless Driving in Oyo Leads to Tragic Death of Traffic Officer
A tragic incident occurred on Saturday, December 14, 2024, in the Agbowo area of Ibadan North Local Government, Oyo State, where a reckless driver fatally struck Kehinde Fabunmi, a Level Four officer of the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).
The driver, operating a black 4Matic Benz with license plate number LSD 862 JS, reportedly disobeyed a traffic light and was subsequently apprehended by OYRTMA officers.
In an attempt to evade arrest, he reversed the vehicle, striking Officer Fabunmi, who sustained severe head injuries.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in Orogun and later transferred to another facility within Ibadan, Fabunmi was pronounced dead.
The Chairman of OYRTMA, Adekoya Adesagba, condemned the incident, emphasizing that such actions against law enforcement officers will not go unpunished.
He stated, “Our officers work tirelessly to protect lives and property on the road. Anyone who assaults or disrespects them will face the full weight of the law.”
The driver was apprehended near the University of Ibadan area and has been arraigned at the Magistrate Court in Iyaganku.
Due to a court recess, the case was adjourned to Thursday, December 19, with the suspect remaining in police custody.
