Abia’s Eziukwu Market Shut by NAFDAC: A Crackdown on Counterfeit Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, following a two-day operation on December 16 and 17, 2024. During this operation, NAFDAC uncovered and destroyed counterfeit and expired products valued at approximately ₦5 billion.

The seized items included:

  • Beverages
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Wines
  • Spirits
  • Vegetable oils
  • Revalidated food items such as noodles, powdered milk, and yogurt

Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s South-East Zonal Director, expressed concern over the persistent illegal activities in the market, despite a previous commitment by market leaders in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters. He described the market as a hub for counterfeit and substandard products.

NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance policy toward such practices and emphasized its commitment to safeguarding public health.
