Femi Falana vs Police: The Ongoing Debate Over a Detained Officer
The Nigeria Police Force has responded to human rights lawyer Femi Falana’s call for the immediate release of Vincent Makinde, a dismissed officer detained since November 11, 2024.
Falana alleged that Makinde has been subjected to inhumane treatment, including being leg-chained at the Asokoro Police Station in Abuja.
In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi clarified that Makinde was dismissed in 2022 following an orderly room trial that found him guilty of offenses such as abuse of office, extortion, gross misconduct, dereliction of duty, and insubordination.
After his dismissal, Makinde allegedly assaulted a senior police officer and escaped custody.
He resurfaced in June 2024, impersonating an Assistant Superintendent of Police and was subsequently arrested while armed with a rifle. During his arrest, Makinde reportedly exhibited violent resistance, necessitating the use of leg restraints to prevent another escape and ensure safety.
Adejobi emphasized that the use of restraining devices is a globally recognized practice for individuals who actively resist lawful detention.
He stated that Makinde remains in custody pending the conclusion of investigations and prosecution, with further inquiries revealing his involvement in additional nefarious activities beyond those leading to his initial dismissal.
The police maintain that Makinde’s detention and the measures employed are in accordance with established protocols to ensure the safety of all parties involved.
They reaffirm their commitment to transparency, accountability, and upholding the rule of law, ensuring that personnel who violate legal standards are held accountable.
