Police Confirm Arrests in Ibadan Stampede: Prophetess Naomi Faces Investigation
A tragic incident occurred on December 18, 2024, in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede at a children’s Christmas funfair resulted in the deaths of 35 minors and left six others critically injured.
The event, organized by the Wings Foundation in partnership with Agidigbo FM, was held at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Ibadan.
In response to the tragedy, the Oyo State Police Command has arrested eight individuals connected to the event. Among those detained is Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, 31, identified as the main sponsor of the event and known as the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
Others arrested include Fasasi Abdulahi, 56, the Principal of Islamic High School; Genesis Christopher, 24; Tanimowo Moruf, 52; Anisolaja Olabode, 42; Idowu Ibrahim, 35; and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, 25.
The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Iyaganku, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police leading the investigation.
The police have assured the public of increased patrols and visibility to prevent any further incidents and have expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has also expressed his condolences and has vowed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
