Ukraine Conflict: What Putin’s Willingness for Talks with Trump Means for Global Politics
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his willingness to engage in discussions with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During his annual press conference on December 19, 2024, Putin stated he is prepared for talks “anytime” with Trump, who has indicated a desire to broker a peace deal swiftly upon taking office.
Putin emphasized that Russia is open to compromise in potential negotiations aimed at resolving the war in Ukraine.
He noted that while he has not spoken to Trump in recent years, he is ready to engage in dialogue to achieve a peaceful resolution.
The Russian President also mentioned that any future negotiations should be based on preliminary agreements reached in Istanbul during the early stages of the conflict.
He underscored the importance of involving legitimate Ukrainian authorities in the peace process, specifically the Ukrainian parliament, while expressing skepticism about engaging with President Volodymyr Zelensky unless he is re-elected.
