Lawyer Stan Alieke Questions Police on Speed Darlington’s Bail Denial
Nigerian musician Speed Darlington, born Darlington Okoye, remains in police custody following his re-arrest on December 11, 2024.
His legal counsel, Stan Alieke, has expressed frustration over the authorities’ refusal to grant bail, despite the artist’s entitlement to it under Nigerian law.
Alieke emphasized that defamation is a civil matter and criticized the police for detaining his client without bail. He stated, “I still maintain my stance on defamation…
The police have been acting beyond ultra vires from our statutory provision and even judicial precedent… and the law says once it’s a matter, the police have no authority over it.”
The lawyer also highlighted the influence of powerful individuals in the entertainment industry, suggesting that their involvement has contributed to the prolonged detention.
He noted, “The prolonged detention is due to the involvement of bigwigs.”
Alieke remains optimistic about securing Darlington’s release, stating that efforts are ongoing to resolve the situation. He mentioned, “Speed will be out soon… He ought to have been out last week… but he will be out… before Friday.”
