Niger Republic Summons Nigerian Diplomat: Understanding the Accusations of Destabilisation
Niger’s Foreign Minister, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, has summoned the chargé d’affaires of Nigeria’s embassy, accusing Nigeria of serving as a “rear base” for efforts to destabilize Niger.
Sangaré stated that, despite attempts to normalize relations, Nigeria continues to offer refuge to officials of Niger’s former regime, allegedly facilitating destabilization efforts in collaboration with certain foreign powers.
Relations between Niger and Nigeria have been strained since a military coup in Niger in 2023 led to the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by Nigeria, has imposed sanctions on Niger and threatened military intervention to restore constitutional order.
