Tribute to Rey Misterio Sr.: Celebrating a Wrestling Icon’s Legacy

Miguel Ángel López Díaz, known in the wrestling world as Rey Misterio Sr., passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 66.

Born on January 8, 1958, in Tijuana, Mexico, Misterio Sr. began his wrestling career in 1976. He was a prominent figure in lucha libre, competing in various promotions, including Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

His international recognition grew following his appearance at WCW’s Starrcade in 1990 alongside Konnan.

Beyond his in-ring accomplishments, Misterio Sr. was a respected trainer, mentoring wrestlers such as his nephew, WWE superstar Rey Mysterio Jr., Konnan, Psicosis, and his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio.

His contributions to the wrestling community were acknowledged with his induction into the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

His passing comes shortly after the death of his brother, Roberto Gutierrez, who died at the age of 76.

The wrestling community has expressed condolences, with Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide stating, “We send our deepest condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.”

Rey Misterio Sr.’s legacy in professional wrestling is profound, influencing numerous talents and leaving an indelible mark on the sport. He is survived by his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio, who continues the family tradition in wrestling.
