Brazil Tourism Hit by Tragic Small Plane Crash Incident
On December 22, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Gramado, a popular tourist town in southern Brazil, when a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in the deaths of all 10 individuals onboard.
The aircraft, a twin-engine Piper PA-42-1000, was piloted by its owner, Luiz Claudio Galeazzi, who was traveling with nine family members.
The crash caused significant damage to several buildings in the area, including a furniture store and a nearby inn, leading to fires that contributed to the injuries of 17 people on the ground.
Among the injured, 12 individuals were hospitalized, with two in critical condition.
The plane had departed from Canela Airport and was en route to Jundiaí in São Paulo state. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Brazilian Air Force’s Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA). Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft was flying in poor weather conditions at the time of the accident.
This incident has deeply affected the community of Gramado, a town known for its cool weather, hiking trails, and traditional architecture, which attracts numerous tourists, especially during the holiday season.
The town had recently suffered from severe floods and was anticipating a busy holiday season.
