Violence Erupts in Kogi: Monarch’s Palace Attacked and Destroyed
In the early hours of Saturday, December 21, 2024, the palace of Etsu Lokoja, HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda-Shelika, Nyamkpa IV, located in Lokoja, Kogi State, was attacked by suspected arsonists.
The assailants set fire to a vehicle and other properties within the palace premises. The monarch narrowly escaped harm by fleeing through a back exit and scaling the fence.
The attack occurred around 1:00 am, with the perpetrators reportedly setting the monarch’s car ablaze. Despite efforts by neighbors to extinguish the flames, the vehicle and other properties were destroyed.
This incident follows a directive from the Chairman of Lokoja Local Government Area, Comrade Abdullahi Adamu, barring Dauda-Shelika from parading himself as the Etsu Nupe of Lokoja.
The directive also halted the planned coronation and cultural event, ‘Lokoja ’24 Nupe Cultural Fiesta,’ scheduled for December 21, 2024.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have not confirmed any connection between the local government’s directive and the arson.
The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident to apprehend those responsible. The monarch has called on the government and security agencies to ensure the safety of traditional institutions and bring the perpetrators to justice.
