NCDC Warns of Escalating Lassa Fever Cases with New Public Advisory
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public advisory in response to a significant increase in Lassa fever cases across the country. As of December 23, 2024, Nigeria has recorded 1,154 confirmed cases and 190 deaths attributed to the disease.
High-Risk Groups:

- Persons consuming food contaminated by rodent excreta.
- Healthcare workers treating patients without appropriate protective equipment.
- Laboratory personnel handling blood samples without necessary precautions.
Preventive Measures:
- Maintain cleanliness in homes and surroundings to deter rodent habitation.
- Store food items in rodent-proof containers and ensure proper waste disposal.
- Avoid drying foodstuffs in open spaces where rodents can access them.
- Practice regular handwashing with soap and water.
- Healthcare workers should utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) when attending to patients.
- Report any suspected cases of Lassa fever to the nearest healthcare facility promptly.
